This Is What Happens When You Walk Your Dog

Happy National Pet Day!

In celebration of National Pet Day on April 11th, we would like to share the history of how hook and loop fasteners were invented!

Did You Know A Pet Inspired the Invention Hook & Loop?

Hook and loop fasteners were first invented by a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral in 1941. One day after returning from hiking in the woods with his dog, he noticed the burrs of a burdock plant kept sticking to his clothes and his dog’s fur. He then looked at the burrs under the microscope and found there were hundreds of hooks that caught onto any loop-shaped material, such as clothing, animal fur, or hair. He decided to create a fastener that imitated the same hook and loop shapes for commercial applications.
